M.S. in Economics Program of Study

Georgia Tech’s Master of Science in Economics will help you enhance your quantitative data science and analytics skills, gain a broader understanding of economic and policy issues, and develop expertise in specialized areas.

In this STEM-certified program, you’ll learn how to gain insight from big data, think strategically in the corporate sector, and critically navigate government and policy. 

With a flexible curriculum, you can tailor your studies to fit career paths in data science, investment banking, consulting, and government agencies or continue your education with a doctoral degree in economics, finance, and other fields. No thesis is required.
 

One-Year, Two-Year, and Part-Time Tracks

We offer one-year, two-year, and part-time tracks to complete the M.S. on your schedule.

The one-year program will allow you to quickly re-enter the job market and minimize tuition costs, while the two-year program provides more time and research experience. Part-time students take one course per semester and complete the program in 3.5 years. 

Whichever track you choose, all students benefit from close faculty guidance, one-on-one advising, and opportunities for independent research.
 

Curriculum

The M.S. in Economics requires ten courses or 30 credit hours. These break down as:

  • Four core courses in Microeconomic Theory, Macroeconomic Theory, Econometrics I, and Econometrics II
  • Four economics electives
  • Two additional electives in any area of study offered at Georgia Tech

The two additional electives provide the opportunity to take classes at Georgia Tech’s renowned College of Engineering, our Top 25 business school, or in other highly-ranked fields such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, cybersecurity, and environmental policy. Integrating insights from these different fields can bring new perspectives, creativity, and depth to your work.

Dual-Degree Options

Students on international visas and those preparing for Ph.D. programs often take advantage of Georgia Tech’s two-year dual-M.S. degree option.

You can apply to any other graduate program at Georgia Tech with the benefit of already being enrolled. Our economics students most commonly earn dual degrees in analytics, statistics, mathematics, quantitative and computational finance, or industrial engineering. They also pair MBA work with their economics degree at the Scheller College of Business’s Top 25 MBA program. 
 

Research Opportunities

Our faculty direct the Climate, Environmental, and Resource (CLEAR) Economics Lab, the Health Economics and Policy Innovation Collaborative (HEPIC), and the Energy Policy and Innovation Center. They also lead the Health Care Consolidation Project and co-organize multiple conferences each year. Ivan Allen College is home to 20+ research centers across the six Schools. 

You will have opportunities to present your work at the annual Ivan Allen College graduate research conference, where students across the College share projects, receive feedback, and compete for awards. The Georgia Tech Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Education hosts the Career, Research, and Innovation Development Conference and Three Minute Thesis competition as well.
