Posted September 25, 2023

Roshani Bulkunde, a third-year Ph.D. student in the School of Economics, was awarded the Herbert P. Haley Fellowship for the 2023-24 academic year. The fellowship, named for the late Herbert P. Haley, ME 1933, recognizes graduate students' significant accomplishments and outstanding academic achievements.

Bulkunde's research focuses on questions at the intersection of health and development economics.

"I am currently studying the effects of India's biggest conditional cash transfer (CCT) program on maternal and infant health," Bulkunde explains. "The CCT program provides financial support for pregnant and lactating mothers to improve the health and nutrition of both mother and child, as well as compensate for wage loss."

Bulkunde also collaborates with her advisor, Associate Professor Shatakshee Dhongde, on a long-running project examining the challenges people in the United States faced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jennifer Nicholas, a Ph.D. student in the School of History and Sociology, also received the Herbert P. Haley Fellowship, marking the first year two students in the Ivan Allen College received the award, Dhongde says.
