1. What do you do?
I’m a mathematics educator at D.C. Public Schools, focused on supporting student achievement through meaningful learning experiences, data-informed instruction, and the development of confidence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The role also includes contributing to schoolwide efforts focused on academic growth, student engagement, and continuous improvement.
2. What’s the coolest part of your job?
Seeing students gain confidence, not only in mathematics, but also in themselves, is one of the most meaningful parts of the work. Many students come from diverse cultural backgrounds, and helping them feel seen, supported, and capable can have a lasting impact. When students feel understood and believed in, they become more willing to take risks, work through challenges, and recognize their own potential.
3. Why are you passionate about it?
The passion for education began through teaching experiences in Asia and has continued through current work with students in Washington. Working with students from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds has shown that learning becomes more powerful when students feel respected, valued, and connected to the classroom. That sense of belonging helps students build confidence, engage more deeply, and see new possibilities for their future.
4. Which skills from your IAC degree have helped you be successful in this career?
The IAC degree strengthened important skills in analytical thinking, data interpretation, research, and problem-solving. Graduate study in economics provided a strong foundation for understanding patterns, evidence, and decision-making. Through a Georgia Tech joint summer program at Stanford University, graduate coursework in statistics, including time series and stochastic processes, further deepened this quantitative foundation and helped connect advanced analytical tools to the teaching of economics and mathematics.
5. What’s your #1 tip for students and alumni interested in your field?
Use your quantitative background to make learning meaningful. Strong skills in data, analysis, and problem-solving can help turn complex ideas into clear, relevant lessons that students can connect to real life.
