Anthony Harding

1. What do you do?

I am an assistant professor in the School of Public Policy at Georgia Tech.

As a professor, I balance teaching and research. I teach courses in cost-benefit analysis and environmental economics to master’s students. My research interests are climate, environmental, and energy economics. My work focuses on the impact of innovative technology on climate change policy and governance.

I also like to bike, read, and try new restaurants.

2. What’s the coolest part of your job?

The people. Every day I get to meet and chat with interesting people. In the classroom, I get to work with smart, inquisitive students who are passionate about learning. In my research, I get to work on complex problems with experts from all different disciplines and backgrounds. Every day, I learn something new.

3. Why are you passionate about it?

Because I think I have one of the coolest jobs. But also because of the power of education. Nothing feels better than when a past student reaches out to you to say how much they enjoyed your class, how they are still using what they learned in your class, or how it inspired them.

4. Which skills from your IAC degree have helped you be successful in this career?

Communication. In both education and research, I need to be able to communicate ideas. Whether it’s to students or to experts, to people in my discipline or another, I need to be able to speak their language.

I was drawn to Georgia Tech because of its emphasis on interdisciplinarity. Studying and working across disciplines, I quickly learned the importance of communication skills.

5. What’s your #1 tip for students and alumni interested in your field?

Keep reading and keep learning. Stay curious.
