Adam Taylor

1. What do you do?

I am a sustainability analyst for a multi-family Real Estate Investment Trust (apartments).

First and foremost, I manage the utility data for accuracy and completion. I use utility data to track our monthly and annual consumption. I work on projects that reduce our energy and water consumption. I track the progress of these projects and work with vendors on ways for us to achieve net zero by 2050. I use models and data to optimize our capital budget to have the most impact on our portfolio.

2. What’s the coolest part of your job?

The coolest part of my job is that I get to do good for the environment and work with data in a way that is more than just making a business money.

3. Why are you passionate about it?

I care deeply about the environment and spend a lot of time outdoors. I knew I wanted to do something in sustainability when I took Matthew Oliver’s energy markets class my sophomore year.

4. Which skills from your IAC degree have helped you be successful in this career?

All the econometrics classes have given me confidence in my abilities to work with data. I also call on my time in Casey Wichman’s climate change class to get creative on abatement projects.

5. What’s your #1 tip for students and alumni interested in your field?

You should plan on doing your master’s. Do research while you’re at school with a professor who has a project pertaining to sustainability. Be passionate about the environment.
